Success Stories

Lesley

“I have always felt incredibly supported by Bedford Hospital and have been actively encouraged to develop and progress during the 32 years that I have worked here There is a really supportive culture and people always go the extra mile to help each other in order to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. There are quite a few of us who have been here for a long time and we try to nurture new members of staff when they join us. That is the main feedback we get when people start their careers at the hospital, how welcome they are made to feel. As we are a district general hospital, it feels a bit like an extended family which makes it a lovely place to work.”

Suzy

“I’m a highly motivated and dedicated person and like to embrace new challenges, so when opportunities have come along for promotion I have applied for them and, fortunately, been successful. I have also been very well supported in terms of my training, growth and development by the Trust and it has been a privilege to work here and progress alongside my colleagues”

“While I was studying I was able to work part time, four days a week, at Bedford and also attend Cardiff University to complete my post-graduate qualifications. It was a very rewarding thing to do and the flexible working policy at the Trust helped me achieve it and certainly progress in my career.

It was a very rewarding thing to do and the flexible working policy at the Trust helped me achieve it and certainly progress in my career. The Trust has demonstrated a lot of loyalty in me and that has made a real difference. I am from the north of England – Manchester – and my plan was to return to my roots but it has been fantastic here and I made the decision to stay and that has really worked out for me.

We are always breaking a lot of ground clinically in midwifery here, such as our introduction of a high-risk birth pool. We were also the first Trust to introduce induction and we are currently pioneering a new breast-feeding initiative. The area is also a great place to be based because there is a diverse population bringing with it a lot of differences in care.

Bedford offers a lot in attractions too. It is easily accessible, has a new shopping complex being built and offers affordable housing on the doorstep for people just starting out in their careers.”

Megan

“I started at Bedford Hospital as a student nurse and completed many of my placements here. When I qualified earlier this year I was determined that this was the hospital where I wanted to start my nursing career and I have really enjoyed it so far. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.

It’s a smaller hospital which makes it easier to get to know everyone quicker. There are many really experienced staff here who are very supportive.

There are also lots of learning opportunities available. The Preceptorship course is very good and I attend many workshops as well as regular development meetings with both my Ward Manager and the Clinical Educator. In the few months since I qualified I have already completed 3 courses.”
